What is CBD?
The hemp plant Cannabis sativa has two “main” naturally occurring compounds - CBD and THC.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is the compound known for its healing properties and relaxation effect.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound more well know for being responsible for the “high” given by marijuana. CBD is not a psychoactive compound, therefore produces no “high” effect.
What is the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil?
The difference between hemp oil and CBD oil, is the part of the plant that each oil comes from. CBD oil is extracted from the plant itself - the stalk, leaves and flowers.
Hemp oil (more correctly termed “hemp seed oil” is pressed from the seeds of the plant, and contains extremely low levels of CBD.
To be classed as “hemp,” the plant has to contain less than 0.3% THC. Hemp that is low THC is generally a high producer of CBD (except for the seeds, which contain 0% THC and very very minimal levels of CBD).
What are the benefits?
Both CBD and Hemp oil are packed with Essential Fatty Acids - more often referred to as “Omegas.”
Omega-3’s in paritcular are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties, and as such are a wonderful addition to the diet to ease symptoms of arthritis and other joint conditions, as well as soothing itchy and inflamed skin and clearing up and rashes or inflammations.
Hemp oil is exceptionally high in protein which offers many benefits such as energy, muscle repair and development, and is essential for growth, brain function and formation of cells.
CBD oil is the product making its way in the world as a pain relief. There are many reports of the effects CBD oil has on animals suffering cancer, seizures and other serious conditions.
Legality in Australia
The laws in Australia surrounding hemp and its products are still being developed. Currently, hemp seeds and their products are all legal and able to be used as food products for both animals and humans.
CBD products aren’t quite illegal, but are still considered a prescription only product and therefore are not able to be purchased legally without a prescription from either a doctor or veterinarian.
